Most of current theories take for granted the autonomy of art, understood as the independence of artistic activity with regards to customary practices we do in our daily life, aimed at the achievement of goals. However, the autonomy of art can be understood in other ways, sometimes even contradictory, for example: as expression of the “purity” of art, but also conversely, as an expression of the true social and political commitment of art. Why is art valuable for human beings? What relation is there between the autonomy of the art and the value that we give to it? How is this relation established in the different Philosophies of Art? As a theoretical frame of the congress the following hypothesis is to be considered: the way in which each theory establishes the relation between the autonomy and the value of art determines the way in which it interprets and assumes the transformation of human life that has taken place in the modern world, thanks to, among other of factors, the avant-gardes.
